Hampton House Health Centre

St Michaels Hill, Cotham, Bristol BS6 6AU

Hampton House, which is the former Homoeopathic Hospital at the top of St Michael’s Hill in Cotham, has been refurbished to provide a new Primary Care Centre. This building now provides a new home for the University of Bristol medical practice, which was formerly operating from sub-standard accommodation in Woodland Road.

Other primary care services that will be delivered from the building, for the general public, include:

  • Physiotherapy services
  • Podiatry (foot care)
  • Speech & language therapy
  • A base for community and district nursing teams including midwives and health visitors
  • A new pharmacy

The lower ground floor is leased by the University of Bristol for an academic research department for Child and Adolescent Health, who have been resident throughout the refurbishment. The third floor is also leased by the University for its Centre for Ethics in Medicine.

The University of Bristol is one of only a handful of Universities in the country that offers GP services dedicated to the needs of its students.

The Homeopathic Hospital was opened in 1920, built by the Wills family in memorial to one of their sons killed in the First World War.

For a number of years the building has been operated as student accommodation by the University, until its sale to Bristol Infracare LIFT in August 2005.

Work started on the refurbishment in August. The visible external signs of the work have been the replacement of the roof slates and the window frames to avoid major maintenance on these items for at least another 25 years.

The major works took place inside the building. A lot of the internal structure had to be demolished and a new structural steel frame is installed. This has allowed it to be re-modelled to suit the new health care services that will be delivered from the building.
